Email is not internet.
Netscape is not internet.
Internet Explorer is not internet.
YOU HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO *DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL* VARIOUS PROGRAMS IF YOU WANT TO USE THE INTERNET!
ALL THE REALLY COOL STUFF HAS TO BE DOWNLOADED! REPEAT: ALL THE REALLY COOL STUFF HAS TO BE DOWNLOADED!
THE BASIC FUNDAMENTAL RULE:
"THOU SHALT NOT WIMP OUT WHEN TRYING TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL NEW PROGRAMS"
OK, *some* people work on machines at work, to which nothing can be downloaded without the consent of the systems administrator. If you're in that bind I really suggest you save your pennies and buy a home computer, because getting administrators to download programs is akin to eating shoe leather -- tiring and unfulfilling.
For the rest of you, who are able to, but do not yet know how to, DOWNLOAD, read on.
THE PRELIMINARIES:
1) The information here is for people with *PCs and Windows95*, *not* Macs or Unix boxes. The rest of you can certainly download but the procedure is (a little) different.
2) This information is for anyone with a basic PC/Win95 setup, but if you have a *sound card, speakers and microphone*, it's even more useful. Get them!
And get a QuickCam from Connectix while you're at it. 89 bucks and you're a bleedin' TV broadcaster, fer crineoutloud! (http://www.connectix.com)
3)As stated above, this information is for people whose computers are *allowed* to download (if you're on at work, your computer may have been blocked from downloading).
4)The indications below are general in nature. Any specific download may vary or require additional steps. If so, take them; it's worth it in the end!
NOTE TO THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE ALREADY FEELING OVERWHELMED:
DO NOT WIMP OUT. PRESS ON BRAVELY! SUCCESS
IS NEAR!
THE MEAT OF THE MATTER (details follow):
STEP ONE:
GO TO THE WEBSITE WHERE THE PROGRAM YOU WANT IS BEING OFFERED FOR DOWNLOAD.
FIND THE BUTTON THAT SAYS "DOWNLOAD" OR "GET THE PROGRAM" OR WHATEVER. YOU CAN FIGURE IT OUT! CLICK THAT BUTTON!
YOU MIGHT HAVE TO FILL OUT A FORM OR SOMETHING, OR HUNT AROUND TILL
YOU FIND WHERE THE BUTTON IS; IT MIGHT BE ON A DIFFERENT PAGE, BUT KEEP
LOOKING!
(incidentally a 'button' may not look
like a button; it may be some blue underlined words, or a picture, but
it will be clickable!)
STEP TWO:
FIND THE DOWNLOADED FILE ON YOUR OWN MACHINE.
STEP THREE:
INSTALL IT!
STEP FOUR:
YOU'RE IN BUSINESS NOW!
DETAILS (read this part!):
After you download, you need to be able to FIND the file that you
downloaded. Here's how:
a. just before you ok the download,
note the NAME of the file that you are downloading. That name will
appear in the download box, and if you look carefully, you'll see to which
directory it's being downloaded as well.
b. after the download is done, click
on the 'START' button in the lower left corner of the 'desktop' (the opening
screen when you start up Win95)
c. click on 'FIND'
d. type in the NAME of the file that
you wrote down (or 'copy'ed by highlighting the downloading file's
name, right-clicking and choosing 'copy')
e. click FIND
f. when you've found the file, all
you have to do is click on it and it will install, perhaps asking you a
few questions but nothing you can't handle! You can't run the program without
installing it, since it's not in a runnable form when it's just been downloaded!
g. after you've installed the program, it may be in the START/PROGRAM list, or it may be on the 'DESKTOP' *or* you may have to right-click on the START button, then click on 'EXPLORE', then go to the directory where the executable program(the one you need to run for anything to actually happen) has been placed (when you install you will be shown exactly where the executable program is going to be put...WRITE IT DOWN! Most of the time the executable will be put into c:\Program Files\NameofCompany\xxxxxxx.exe.
For example, Iphone might be in c:\Program Files\Iphone\iphone.exe.
Get the idea?
h. After you start the executable program
you still need to figure out how it works (click on the 'help' button)
*and* if it's an internet thing, like a telephone program, you need to
be sure that your internet connection is open. Otherwise the damn thing
will just sit there.
